An Inquiry Unit into the
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911
Brief Overview:
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Tragedy Unit utilizes an assortment of sources: primary, secondary, written, and visual. Activities include a hands-on classroom activity for students to experience factory piece work assembly, and document based questions to help students understand the dangerous environment garment workers endured in the early 1900’s.
A virtual tour of the FASNY Museum of Firefighting will provide an opportunity for students to see fire fighting apparatus from the 1700’s to the 1900’s. An audio visual (power point) presentation with photographs and film footage of steam fire apparatus shows how the fire started, the fire fighting response, and the aftermath. Students will come to understand the significance of the Triangle Fire, and gain a raised awareness about fire safety. For grades 7- 8: meets NY State Learning Standards.
