The museum offers the following self-guided programs, daily, to all visitors:
The McCadam Cheese Fire Safety and Prevention Discovery Room:
The discovery room has stations that change seasonally, but usually feature
educational programming including
firematic crafts, Fire Safe and Smart folders and activity sheets, games, books, puzzles and interactive stations.
The McCadam Safety Station Puppet Theatre is located here and shows are presented on the weekends. Please call for
specific show times.
Learn About it, Do it! Think About it Interactive Program:
This program features five stations located throughout the Museum. Children can learn about a firefighting subject,
do a hands-on activity related to what they have learned and think about the questions posed to them concerning the
activity they just did. The stations are as follows:
Bucket Brigade: Simulates an old-fashioned bucket brigade using reproduction leather buckets and balls to
simulate water.
Parade Activity: Select your instruments, form your lines, select your musical accompaniment and parade around
the gallery to the sounds of a real firemen's parade band.
Turnout Gear: Try on the gear that the real firemen wear when fighting a fire or the child-size reproduction
firemen's gear.
Emergency Sound Station: Make some noise: ring bells, alarms and reproduction fire rattles.
Sequencing Interactive: Do you know which fire apparatus or fire gear came first, second, etc.? This activity
challenges children to put the colorful fire truck and firemen magnets in the correct order.
Creative Play on Selected Fire Trucks:
The Museum offers children the opportunity to immerse themselves in the experience of being a firefighter by offering
creative dress up and play on designated fire trucks. Child and adult-sized turnout gear is available for children to
wear and five trucks have been designated as creative play stations in the Museum. Children can sit behind the wheel of
a real fire truck in the gear the pros wear and let their imaginations soar!
Guided tours are available for school groups or other organizations consisting of ten or more individuals. A picnic
area is also available for groups of ten or more. Guided tours and the picnic facilities must be booked at least two
weeks in advance and are booked on a fire-come, first-serve basis. Please call the Museum at 518-822-1875 to book a
guided tour.
