Currier and Ives... Printmakers to the American People

The quaint prints of Currier and Ives offer us a window into the lives of Americans during the nineteenth century. Their prints helped America define its national identity. Describing themselves as "publishers of cheap and popular pictures,” Currier and Ives were the leaders in lithograph printing during their time. Although their prints covered a variety of subjects, from disasters of the day, to famous people, to daily life, their depiction of firefighters are some of the best visual representations of the romantic age of firefighting ever executed.

This exhibition explores the work of Nathanial Currier and James Merritt Ives and the process of lithography. The series of lithographs "The Life of a Fireman” were extremely popular when first printed and they are still among the most sought after prints of the era by collectors today. Perhaps this is because this folio offers such a vibrant, visual picture of the volunteer firefighters of the time. The Currier and Ives later lithograph series, "The American Fireman” is well represented in the exhibit, in addition to lithographs from the series "The Life of a Fireman.
